About Avon Ohio

Avon Ohio is located just 22 miles west of downtown Cleveland, along the northeast border of Lorain County. It is surrounded by the suburbs of Sheffield, North Ridgeville, Avon Lake, and Westlake.

You’re just minutes from the shores of Lake Erie. Toledo Ohio is about 1½ hours west. Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is roughly 12 miles away.

From a farm town to one of Northeast Ohio’s fastest-growing communities – oh what a change Avon has made in the past 20 years! Since the year 2000, Avon has more than doubled its population. Today, it has a population of just over 25,000, offering a sparse suburban feel.

Much of Avon still has a rural feel, but with the convenience of all the amenities you’d want in a hometown. From shopping and dining to recreation and exceptional schools, Avon is fortunate to have almost anything you need within its borders. In fact, Avon is consistently voted the #1 Place to Live in Lorain County!

Avon has many features that families look for when choosing a good community to raise children. Avon offers an enviable combination of excellent schools (ranked in the top 5% of Ohio school districts), college-educated neighbors who tend to support education because of their own experiences, low crime, low taxes (no RITA), and a high rate of homeownership (over 80%) in predominantly newer single-family properties.

The number of new housing communities built in the past few decades has increased traffic congestion—the #1 complaint about Avon. Implementing additional infrastructure improvements, specifically widening streets to create multi-lane roads, is mandated to improve traffic flow.

Restaurants, Parks and Activities in Avon, OH

Whether you are ready for a day of shopping, searching for antiques, hiking, or enjoying craft cocktails, you’ll find it in Avon.

As more undeveloped land becomes commercial and retail space, the city of Avon has ensured that its parks and recreation areas maintain a balance among its expanding economic development. Recently, the city purchased 17 acres of land adjacent to Veteran’s Memorial Park. The new park, Eagle Point, is dedicated to “passive recreation,” like fishing on the 3.5-acre pond. Prior to this park expansion, recent recreational development included adding trails through the 57-acre Avon Wetlands tract at the corner of Riegelsberger and Jaycox roads.

There’s also Schwartz Park, which encompasses 67.8 acres with ball fields/courts, a playground, nature trails, and pavilions with picnic tables and grills.

If you’re looking for outdoor swimming, the Avon Aquatic Facility offers two pools, diving boards, a couple of killer twisty slides and a sprayground. The adjacent Avon Fitness Court is an outdoor multi-station bodyweight circuit training venue for all ages.

Every year, the community of Avon gets together for family-friendly events including a bike parade through town on the Fourth of July, the Aunt Teak and Uncle Junque flea market that brings antique vendors from all over Ohio, and the Avon Heritage Duck Tape Festival. Home of Duck® brand duct tape, Avon is proclaimed the “Duct Tape Capital” of the world. The festival is a free, three-day event celebrating all things duct tape. It draws more than 50,000 attendees each year who enjoy dozens of larger-than-life sculptures made of duct tape, live entertainment, a carnival and a parade.

Aside from the City of Avon’s facilities and events, there’s also Lorain County Metro Parks’ Miller Nature Preserve with hiking trails, a seasonal butterfly house, and a 5,000-square-foot conservatory featuring orchids and various plant specimens from around the world. There’s also a visitor center with a gift shop, café, event hall, and an outdoor patio that hosts weekly music events during summertime. During winter, the community center hosts art, cooking and card-making classes.

French Creek YMCA is a state-of-the-art, 6,000+ square-foot facility featuring an eight-lane indoor pool, aerobics studio, family gym, sauna, whirlpool, wellness center and child-care center.

If you enjoy baseball, catch a Lake Erie Crushers professional baseball game at Crushers Stadium, offering affordable family fun (May through early September).

If you’re a golfer, Avon has two public courses: Bob-O-Link Golf Course and Sweetbriar. Inclement weather won’t stop your golf game at Golf Zone, where you can play realistic 3D golf based on famous courses around the world.

There are also two private clubs with golf courses: Avon Oaks Country Club and Red Tail Golf Club.

On rainy days, you’ll find indoor entertainment for the whole family at Main Event, offering state-of-the-art bowling; more than 110 of the hottest interactive and video games; multi-level laser tag; regulation billiards and relaxing shuffleboard; and a bar & restaurant.

Maria’s Field of Hope

Come every Autumn, the the beloved memory garden Maria’s Sunflower Field of Hope is in full bloom. The Prayers From Maria Foundation has recently secured a permanent location on the east side of Jaycox Road, across from Middleton Road.

There is a plethora of shopping options at Avon Commons: Costco, Heinen’s grocery, GNC, Target, Kohl’s, Walmart, Home Depot, World Market, Michael’s, Marshall’s, Old Navy, Bath & Body Works, Famous Footwear, Panera, IHOP, Friday’s, Applebee’s, and more!

As for restaurants, a great date-night restaurant is Nemo Grille located in the historic Alten House. In Forno’s perfectly crispy authentic wood-fired pies are made in accordance with the rules of the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (True Neapolitan Pizza Association). For a knockout hamburger, try Heck’s Cafe. Some of the area’s best prime steaks are prepared in the beautifully restored historic barn of Strip Steakhouse (we recommend the Flip Flop cold lobster salad and any of the steaks accompanied by Gruyère Mac and Cheese and Bourbon Creamed Corn). To satisfy your sweet tooth, don’t miss the array of macarons at Kelsey Elizabeth Cakes
