Clifton Lagoons Neighborhood Assets:
Clifton Lagoons residents have access to exclusive amenities shared with the adjacent Clifton Park community, including Lakewood’s only private beach (nearly a quarter-mile-long sandy beach along Lake Erie!), a playground, tennis courts, pickleball courts, a half-basketball court, picnic tables, grills, a fire pit, and a lakeside clubhouse (aka the Beach House) that can be rented for occasions.
Such recreational offerings foster neighborly interactions, resulting in an extremely close-knit community. Neighbors regularly meet on the beach for potlucks, clambakes or impromptu glasses of wine.
A security station limits amenity access to residents of Clifton Park and Clifton Lagoons. Select members of The Clifton Club are granted permissive access to the beach and beach house.
Amenities are held in trust for lot owners of the Lagoons, Clifton Park, and The Clifton Club.
Clifton Lagoons History:
The area began as a summer resort in 1869 with beaches, rental boats, picnic groves, a dance hall, and beer gardens. Visitors traveled to the resort via a narrow gauge railroad, the Rocky River Railroad.
By 1894, the property was being developed into the master-planned, upper-class residential community of Clifton Park. However, at the time, there was no lagoon.
During the winter of 1908-1909, the Rocky River and Lake Erie experienced such a deep freeze that the ice caused a depression in the soil at the northwest corner of Clifton Park’s property. In 1912, a lagoon was dredged to accommodate boathouses for residents. In later years, the boathouses were converted to living quarters.
In 1912, the developers transferred Clifton Beach and its common areas into trusts for Clifton Park and Clifton Lagoons lot owners.
Since its inception, Clifton Park & Lagoons have been home to many of Cleveland’s most prominent citizens. One of the Lagoons’ most famous residences is the historic castle-like home at 830 Beach Rd. It began as a boathouse for the 145′ yacht La Belle belonging to Alexander Winton, one of Cleveland’s auto pioneers, who later added the building and living quarters. Sometime later, it was owned by Vernon Stouffer of Stouffer Foods. During Stouffer’s ownership, the home was briefly rented to Eliot Ness (one of the country’s greatest law enforcement officers and crime fighters), an avid boater and party host, who had been hired by the city of Cleveland as safety director.
